Mission

One of the things we are passionate about at St Mark’s is sharing God’s love with our local community and the wider world.  We have a small Mission Committee which help to do this in three ways:

– Personal involvement

The Mission Committee encourages all members of St Mark’s to do whatever their gifts enable them to do in living out the Gospel in practical ways.  This can include collecting during Christian Aid Week, supporting the Hitchin Foodbank, praying for PHASE, the Hitchin Churches Schools Worker Trust, or simply being neighbourly to those in need.

– Prayer

The Mission Committee prepares a Prayer Cycle every year, providing subjects for prayer each day for the church and neighbourhood.  It also encourages the regular use of the Churches Together in Hitchin Prayer Link through which we remember the work of  other churches in the town and they in turn pray for us.

– Giving

St Mark’s gives 10% of its regular income to good Christian causes working locally, nationally and internationally, and each year the Mission Committee recommends which these should be.  They include Anglican mission agencies such as the Church Mission Society, with which we have a particular link through Michael Green, our mission partner in Jordan, through to more local bodies helping discharged prisoners and the homeless.

During Lent we focus on a specific issue and support a particular appeal each year.

Happily, the Mission Committee does not feel it is trying to convince an unwilling congregation in all the above.  It rejoices at the generosity of so many who serve, pray and give in so many different ways and it regards it as a privilege to be part of this active fellowship.
