Lent Appeal – 2016

Rapid Response Fund for refugees arriving on Greek Islands Last September, the sight of the body of a small refugee child washed up on a beach sent shock waves round the world and there were urgent appeals for help. Among those who responded was the Anglican mission agency Us (formerly the United Society for the Propagation of the Gospel) which used its Rapid Response Fund to send money to Christian organisations on Greek islands. Working together, these Anglican, Greek Orthodox and Salvation Army groups provide food, drink and shelter for those who arrive after an often perilous journey. The groups […]

Christingle Service 7th February 2016

On Sunday afternoon a box of oranges stood at the back of St Mark’s, ready to be turned into Christingles. As each person came for the service they were each given an orange, so that they were ready to create their very own Christingle. We thought about the orange symbolising the world by playing a game with a blow up globe, trying to name as many countries as we could. People were then sent off to put some red tape around their oranges as we thought about all that Jesus has done for us. Next it was the turn of […]

Team Service at St Mary’s Church – Sunday 7th February

Our annual Team Service took a slightly different style this year. Gone was the normal accommodation of a circus tent to be replaced by the more traditional setting of St Mary’s Church. Gone was our normal summer date for joining together to be replaced by a wintery February day instead. This was all in aid of marking the end of one chapter and the beginning of a new one. Maglie Calcio A poco prezzo On the 7th February people from St Mark’s, St Mary’s, St Faith’s and Holy Saviour churches in Hitchin were joined by people from the churches in […]

Becky’s Haircut

Becky decided to have her hair cut so she could donate it to the Little Princess Trust*.  This charity provides real hair wigs, free of charge, to children throughout the UK and Ireland who have lost their own hair through cancer treatment. As a result of hair donations, the trust obtains a large number of wigs manufactured for free but any that they need to buy cost, on average, in excess of £350.  She thought it would be great if she could raise enough money to buy at least one wig. On the 19th November she had 13 inches of […]

Quiz Night – 2015

On Friday 13th November we took advantage of having a church where everything is movable, to be able to move our normal rows of chairs to make way for tables, quiz sheets, pens and fevered brains as we settled down for our quiz night. Every table was full of people battling to work out who was in the photos, whether statements were true or false, and trying to dredge from the back of our brains that little known fact that we knew would come in useful one day! Teams were made up from church members and friends of the church, […]

New Rural Dean

People from all over Hitchin deanery (comprising Hitchin, Letchworth and surrounding villages) came to St. Mark’s on Thursday 12th November to support and pray for Revds. Jane Mainwaring and Darren Collins as Archdeacon Jonathan commissioned them respectively to be Rural Dean and Assistant Rural Dean of Hitchin with responsibility for the oversight and pastoral care of all the clergy and their churches in their area. The service was a simple but moving one based on Iona worship with great hymns chosen by Jane and Darren and a thought-provoking reflection by Archdeacon Jonathan. Over refreshments afterwards we all had a chance […]

Autumn Party – Part 2

Friday evening saw an Autumn party for older children and young people. There were Wii competitions, air hockey and pool played to various sets of rules (and none!), sparklers and glow stick construction competitions in the dark of the vicarage garden. The high light of this party has always been the chocolate fountain with this year being no exception- an experience being made positively healthy by fruit being used on the skewers (plus a few marshmallows and the odd bit of cake!). Autumn Party – Part 1

On Friday afternoon countless toddlers and children enjoyed a Rugby World Cup-themed Autumn party.
