Holy Week and Easter Services
Compline – Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday 8pm
Each year, we mark the first three days of Holy Week with an evening service called Compline or Night Prayer. This is a simple, reflective, said service which those who attend find very calming and peaceful.
Iona Style Communion – Maundy Thursday 8pm
Maundy Thursday is the day when we remember the Last Supper when Jesus told his disciples to remember him through bread and wine. To mark this day we have a communion service which is slightly different from our normal service, to help us think afresh on the symbolism of the communion. We use material developed by the Iona community which makes use of lots of different people’s voices throughout the service. The service ends by the traditional stripping of the altar when, in silence, we take away all the decoration in the sanctuary as we prepare for the bareness and bleakness of the events of Good Friday.
Good Friday Morning Services
We begin our observance of Good Friday with a simple service of prayer and reflection at 9.30am. As many as wish to then leave church to walk, together, to Bancroft Gardens where we join with others from across the churches in Hitchin for the Walk of Witness and the service in the Market Square. You are welcome to join us for any part of or all of this Good Friday morning.
Good Friday Messy Church 2.30pm-4.30pm
This is an afternoon aimed at helping all the family encounter the Easter Story. We begin with an hour of craft activities linked to the events of Holy Week and Easter and follow this by a short and very informal service, finishing with hot cross buns and drinks. It is an event where the whole family can join in and everyone is welcome.
Easter Sunday
On Easter Sunday morning we have a simple service of Holy Communion at 7.00am and then at 10.00am we have a Family Communion service which will include a children’s activity and an Easter Egg hunt.
If you would like any further details about any of these services, please contact Jane Mainwaring on 01462 434686 or jane@stmarks-hitchin.org.uk
